To Catch Up with Competitors, Apple Will Call on Artificial Intelligence

Apple plans to implement photo editing features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac using artificial intelligence to enhance competitiveness with Android devices, Bloomberg reports citing sources.

Expand and Enhance

Image processing using built-in AI models, according to sources, will be done within a few seconds. The presentation of the tools is scheduled for this fall on the Apple Intelligence platform for iOS 27.

Today, Apple devices allow users to apply filters to photos and crop images. There is also an editing mode called "Clean" — the only one that works based on AI and allows users to remove objects from images. The new iOS will feature a section with Apple Intelligence tools, which will also include functions like "Expand," "Enhance," and "Change Frame."

"Magic Eraser"

However, the development of new features is facing challenges. According to developers, some of the tools showed low-quality performance during internal testing.

Additionally, users have already criticized Apple's first AI tool, claiming that it sometimes produces unsatisfactory results.

Bloomberg notes that the company is trying to catch up in integrating AI into photo editors. Competitor Google has offered such capabilities on Pixel devices for several years, including features like "Magic Eraser" for removing objects from the frame, "Sharpening," which reduces the blurriness of photos, and others.

Another company, Samsung Electronics, is also actively implementing AI photo editing in its Galaxy smartphone lineup.
