PCMag stated that using Windows 10 without updates is unsafe.
Using Windows 10 is safe if you ensure the receipt of patches. This is reported by PCMag.
In October 2025, Microsoft stopped releasing regular updates for Windows 10 and began preparing the operating system (OS) for the end of support. PCMag editor Neil Jay Rubenkink assessed the security risks of using the outdated OS.
Rubenkink noted that as soon as the system stops receiving updates, it becomes relatively easy prey for hackers and fraudsters. "There is an ongoing battle between virus developers and antivirus companies," the author explained. According to him, the end of support can be compared to one of the fighters stopping to resist. Therefore, the specialist emphasized the importance of establishing regular receipt of security patches.
In this regard, the journalist suggested subscribing to Extended Security Updates (ESU) — this can be done for free. Microsoft will release patches at least until October 2026, and update Microsoft Defender antivirus until the end of 2028.
Rubenkink concluded that at some point, users will have to switch to Windows 11. This will be necessary when Microsoft or third-party developers stop releasing updates and supporting programs running on Windows 10.
