The compound from passion fruit may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

A compound found in passion fruit may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Oslo, who discovered that the molecule alpha-amyrin protects key processes in the brain and could serve as a basis for future medications. The work was published in Advanced Science (AS).

During the study, it was found that alpha-amyrin prevents the accumulation of toxic proteins that damage neurons. Additionally, the substance supports the function of mitochondria—the "energy stations" of cells, which are essential for the normal functioning of the brain.

Experiments on mice with an Alzheimer's disease model showed that with the administration of alpha-amyrin, there was a reduction in the accumulation of harmful substances, and memory significantly improved. Researchers also found that the molecule is capable of penetrating from the blood into the brain and remains in the body for a sufficiently long time, which is important for potential medicinal use.

The researchers emphasize that alpha-amyrin is found not only in passion fruit but also in other fruits and vegetables. According to them, the data obtained confirm that a diet rich in plant products may be associated with a lower risk of dementia.
