Journalists from Neowin explained why Microsoft’s operating system (OS) needs the Windows.old folder and whether it can be deleted. The material is available on the media's website.

The authors of the portal reminded that after installing a new OS or updating Windows, a Windows.old folder appears on the system drive. The material states that this directory contains an archive of the previous installation with program files, some user data, core components, and Windows files.

Journalists from the publication revealed the mystery of the mysterious folder that cannot be deleted without causing errors. They noted that such a directory is necessary so that in case of failure, the OS can be restored to its previous state. However, after a successful installation of the new Windows, the folder can be removed.

With administrator rights, Windows.old can be deleted without consequences. To do this, you need to find the 'Disk Cleanup' utility through search, click on the 'Clean up system files' button, find the 'Previous Windows installations' button, and select 'OK'. After that, the OS will delete Windows.old and the previous system restore point.

Earlier, journalists from ZDNet found a built-in tool in Windows that allows checking the battery status of a laptop. The option can be accessed through the search bar.
