Caught Up and Surpassed America: Latvia Ranks First in the World for an Important Internet Indicator

Minister of Communications Aitis Švinkas reported to the government on the implementation of the Latvian Communications Industry Development Plan, adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers led by Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš.

During the report on the implementation of the plan, interesting figures emerged.

In our republic, the consumption of mobile internet data has phenomenally increased – from 7.6 GB per month in 2016 to 54 GB in 2024. For comparison, this is equivalent to downloading a full movie from the internet every single day.

Latvia has surpassed such undoubtedly advanced technological countries as Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Ireland in this indicator, ranking first in the OECD.

In comparison, the average American has only 14 GB of mobile internet per month. This is likely why they still have to go to the cinema to watch Hollywood blockbusters, which our guys watch on their devices – practically for free.

The average price of fixed broadband internet in Latvia is $16.2 per month, which is almost three times lower than the average level in OECD countries ($38.7). The only country with cheaper internet than ours is Slovakia.

There are also price giants like Canada, where the average monthly cost is around $80. With such prices, it’s easier to look at pictures in books.
