The American company SpaceX plans to create a network of data centers in space for performing complex computations in the field of artificial intelligence.
The company has requested permission to launch up to 1 million satellites into low Earth orbit to implement the project, Bloomberg reports.
In the application submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, SpaceX describes the project as "the first step towards creating a Type II Kardashev civilization," capable of harnessing solar energy to support AI applications for billions of people and ensuring a multi-planetary future for humanity. The idea belongs to the company's founder Elon Musk.
According to the documents, the satellites are planned to be deployed in orbits ranging from 500 to 2000 km using the reusable Starship rocket. The system is expected to be a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to ground data centers and to meet the sharp increase in demand for computing power for AI.
Cooling will be achieved through natural radiative heat dissipation into space, without the use of water.
Power supply is planned to be provided by solar energy, and communication between satellites will be facilitated through laser channels.
