Musk Demands $134 Billion from OpenAI and Microsoft in Court

Elon Musk has demanded up to $134 billion from OpenAI and Microsoft in court. The billionaire reminded that he was the first to invest in the AI startup 10 years ago. OpenAI and Microsoft rejected the claims, and the case will be examined by a jury, DW reports.

American billionaire Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. The lawsuit was registered in the docket of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday, January 16. The amount claimed by Musk against OpenAI and Microsoft reaches $134 billion.

Musk Was at the Origins of OpenAI

OpenAI was founded by Altman and Musk in 2015 as a non-profit research startup in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The lawsuit states that Musk invested $38 million or 60% of the company's initial capital at that time. He also helped hire the first employees, establish contacts, and lend authority to the project.

In 2018, Musk left the board of OpenAI and began developing his own projects. One of them today is the AI chatbot Grok on the social network X, a competitor to ChatGPT.

OpenAI Without Musk Started Collaborating with Microsoft

After Musk's departure, OpenAI secured funding from Microsoft and sold part of its shares to the corporation. The company then launched ChatGPT and earned billions of dollars from it.

The lawsuit claims that OpenAI is now worth about $500 billion. Musk calls this an unjust profit gained through his investments. Therefore, he demands that OpenAI pay him between $65.6 billion and $109.43 billion, and from Microsoft between $13.3 billion and $25.06 billion.

OpenAI and Microsoft Disagree with the Claims

OpenAI called the lawsuit "baseless." A Microsoft lawyer stated that the claims against the corporation in the lawsuit are unsubstantiated, according to Reuters. According to him, both companies have already filed a motion to disagree with Musk's position.

The court proceedings are expected to begin in April. It will take place with a jury.
