2.1 liters of dry wine per week will also not harm an adult man.
The negative impact of alcohol on human organs and systems directly depends on the amount of alcohol consumed, said Alexander Umnov, a lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education. He shared his opinion in a conversation with the media.
The doctor explained that at a dose of alcohol up to 120 milligrams, the body is capable of fully metabolizing it through liver enzymes. However, exceeding this dose leads to a disruption of the liver's barrier function, allowing alcohol to enter the systemic bloodstream and accumulate in the tissues of organs, he added. This results in myocardial dystrophy, hypertensive states, and arrhythmia, he noted.
"Alcohol has a destructive effect on the gastrointestinal tract, causing chemical burns to the mucous membrane and the development of peptic ulcers and cancer. From the pancreas, the risk of pancreatic necrosis increases, leading to dysfunction in the production of insulin and pancreatic enzymes. This becomes the cause of insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes and disrupts digestive processes, leading to cachexia," Umnov explained.
The surgeon warned that alcohol also has a neurotoxic effect, impacting cognitive functions and causing personality degradation. Chronic consumption of vodka leads to a decline in intellectual abilities and loss of critical thinking, he emphasized.
There is a concept known as "Low-Risk Alcohol Consumption," noted medical professionals.
Such consumption is calculated as follows:
-
For men — no more than 210 grams of pure alcohol (which is 2.1 liters of dry wine or 0.63 liters of vodka or 5.88 liters of light beer) per week;
-
For women — no more than 140 grams of pure alcohol (which is 1.4 liters of dry wine or 0.42 liters of vodka or 3.92 liters of light beer) per week.
At the same time, there should be at least 2 days of complete sobriety per week. Note that low risk for health is just a low risk, but it is not a safe amount of alcohol!
