The American startup Air Protein offers to create protein products from carbon dioxide, which is abundantly available in atmospheric emissions. This is a revival and rethinking of an old NASA development from the 1960s. At that time, in search of a solution to increase the autonomy of space flights, scientists stumbled upon microbes called 'hydrogenotrophs,' but the research did not progress beyond a few experiments.

Hydrogenotrophs are interesting because they feed on carbon dioxide – that is, they can absorb the exhaled air of astronauts. The product of their metabolism is various amino acids, which are the 'building blocks' for proteins and meat in general. Thus, the microbes simultaneously filter the air on the spacecraft and create food products.

At Air Protein, they developed their own gas mixture composition, which, in addition to carbon dioxide, also contains various enzymes. After processing by the microbes, a brown powder is produced, which neither looks nor tastes like meat. However, it can effectively replace meat in a person's diet. The process of producing a serving takes several days and involves minimal energy costs, as well as other resources, unlike the production of conventional beef or chicken.

The startup's authors do not hide that they intend to compete with numerous projects aimed at creating meat from plants. Moreover, this is a way to beneficially utilize numerous emissions into the atmosphere and feed many hungry people with an inexpensive product.
