The American company Lucid has unveiled the concept of a two-seat unmanned electric vehicle, Lunar, designed for use as a taxi. The new robotaxi has no pedals or steering wheel.

Lucid has introduced a specially designed concept of an autonomous electric vehicle named Lunar. The concept is based on the Midsize electric platform developed by Lucid for mid-sized electric vehicles. New electric vehicles not intended for taxis will also be created on this platform, reports Focus citing Interesting Engineering.

The Lunar electric vehicle is a two-seat unmanned transport designed for use as a taxi. It has been specifically developed for fleets providing autonomous taxi services. Lucid is already in talks with Uber regarding the large-scale deployment of these electric vehicles.

The Lunar electric vehicle does not have traditional controls, meaning it lacks a steering wheel and pedals. It has been designed to maintain operational efficiency over long periods, even with intensive use.

Lucid has created the Lunar robotaxi concept based on the new Midsize electric platform for mid-sized electric vehicles. This platform will also be used to create regular electric vehicles that anyone can purchase.

Lucid stated that the simple interior and fully autonomous design offer efficient use of the Lunar in large taxi fleets. It has also been revealed that the architecture of the new electric vehicles already includes the integration of sensors, computing systems, and driver assistance technologies necessary for autonomous driving.

Lucid announced that two electric crossovers for personal use — Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth — will also be created based on the Midsize platform.

The cost of electric vehicles on the Midsize platform will start at $50,000. The platform also features Lucid's new electric drive, Atlas. Engineers have designed the system to be smaller, lighter, and easier to manufacture.

Lucid stated that energy efficiency remains its main advantage. More efficient electric vehicles require smaller batteries, which reduces their cost.
