GTA Creator Discusses the Idea of Making a Game Set in Moscow

GTA creator explains why Rockstar did not release a game set in Moscow.

One of the creators of the early GTA series games, Obbe Vermey, stated that the developers had an idea to set the title in Moscow. He revealed this in an interview with GamesHub.

Vermey was one of the lead game designers for GTA III, IV, Vice City, and San Andreas. In a conversation with the media, he mentioned that Rockstar Games had the idea to set the new installment of Grand Theft Auto not in the USA, but in other countries and cities around the world. The Russian capital was on the list of locations.

"We had ideas for GTA games in Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, and Istanbul," the developer said. According to him, the studio was close to starting development on a game set in Tokyo, Japan. Moreover, the main work could have been done by a partner studio in Japan. However, this did not happen.

Vermey explained that GTA has always been focused on the USA because America has a number of pop culture phenomena and stereotypes familiar to people from any part of the world. Additionally, the game creators did not want to risk their money. "People love to propose bold ideas, but when billions of dollars are at stake, it all comes down to the idea: 'Let's do what we know how to do again,'" Obbe Vermey stated.

In September, game publisher Nigel Lowrie called GTA VI a project of unattainable levels. "I would say the new Grand Theft Auto is potentially an AAAAA level game," Lowrie admitted.

Recall that recently the best-selling games of all time were announced: in the top of best sales, there are two games from Rockstar Games — Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5.
