Telegram founder Pavel Durov has achieved the cancellation of judicial oversight. He can now leave France and is no longer required to regularly check in with the police. Durov was accused of evading cooperation with law enforcement, writes DW.
French authorities have lifted exit restrictions for Telegram messenger founder Pavel Durov, who is under investigation for possible facilitation of criminal activities on the platform. This was reported on Thursday, November 13, by AFP, citing an anonymous source.
Previously, Durov was only allowed limited trips to Dubai, where he resides, but now he can freely leave France. The entrepreneur is also exempt from the obligation to regularly check in at the police station in Nice, AFP notes.
Investigation in France Against Durov
In France, the founder of Telegram is accused of insufficient content moderation on the messenger and evasion of cooperation with law enforcement. According to French investigators, this makes Durov an accomplice to crimes such as the distribution of child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud. In March, it became known that Durov was allowed to temporarily leave France, after which he flew to Dubai. Meanwhile, the Paris prosecutor's office rejected his requests for trips to the USA and Norway.
