This year, Latvia has recorded the highest number of cyberattacks to date, said Baiba Kaškina, head of the Latvian institution for preventing IT security incidents Cert.lv, at the opening of the "Kiberšahs" conference on Wednesday, LETA reports.
She noted that the situation with cybersecurity in Latvia remains challenging — systems are constantly under attack, but thanks to multi-layered protection and professional work, most attacks are successfully repelled.
“ The number of registered incidents this year has been the highest to date. This clearly confirms that our work is as important as ever. We must continue to adapt, improve, and together maintain resilience,” said Kaškina.
At the opening of the conference, Kaškina also pointed out that 2025 is currently characterized by stable progress, targeted work, and relatively few surprises in the field of cybersecurity.
The head of Cert.lv emphasized that one of the most significant achievements of this year is the implementation of the EU Directive on the security of network and information systems (NIS2) in Latvia. Latvia is one of the few countries that has implemented this directive ahead of schedule. Several projects have also been implemented in the field of education to promote development: a technical program in cybersecurity has been accredited at one of the universities, and other university projects have been carried out.
At the same time, Cert.lv continues to work on establishing a Cybersecurity Operations Center and strengthening its capacity for threat prevention and analysis, added Kaškina.
As previously reported, on Wednesday and Thursday, October 30, the conference "Kiberšahs" is taking place in Riga, discussing the latest trends and innovations in the field of cybersecurity. The main topics of the conference include the security challenges of operational technologies, financial fraud, supply chain integrity, the dependence and influence of artificial intelligence, and other issues.
The event features representatives from the security sector — technical and political cybersecurity experts, internet and telecommunications service providers, and other stakeholders in the industry.
