In Germany, a man accidentally found an ancient Roman hoard and hid it for eight years.

A resident of Germany found a huge hoard of ancient Roman coins in Lower Saxony and hid it from the authorities for eight years. This was reported by Live Science.

The man accidentally discovered the coins while searching for valuables with a metal detector in the area of the village of Borsum back in 2017. Since the German was digging illegally, he did not report this to the authorities. It was only in April that the treasure hunter decided to tell everything.

In October, archaeologists went to the site of the find and unearthed even more coins, dating back 2000 years. The total number of artifacts amounted to about 450 pieces. This is one of the largest ancient Roman hoards found in Lower Saxony. The coins date back to the early Roman Empire. They were minted in the 1st century AD, shortly after the fall of the republic. Scientists still have to determine how they ended up in this territory.

The man who found the hoard underwent special courses on working with metal detectors after speaking with the archaeologists and can now officially search for valuables. The case of concealing treasures against him was dismissed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.
