In the coming decades, data centers will be moved to space - Bezos

He says humanity should widely leverage the advantages of artificial intelligence.

Jeff Bezos, founder and executive chairman of Amazon, predicted during the Italian Technology Week in Turin that gigawatt data processing centers will be built in space within the next 10 to 20 years. In his opinion, continuously available solar energy will allow them to surpass those located on Earth.

According to Bezos, as reported by Reuters, this idea has already become popular among technology giants, as ground-based data processing centers have increased the demand for electricity and water to cool their servers.

"These giant clusters are better built in space because there we have solar energy around the clock. There are no clouds, no rain, no bad or good weather," said Bezos.

He stated that this will become possible within the next few decades. Bezos noted that the transition to space infrastructure is part of a broader trend of using space to improve life on Earth. In particular, he cited meteorological and communication satellites as examples.

"The next step is data processing centers, and then other types of production," he added.

He mentioned that placing data processing centers in space has its challenges, particularly the difficulty of maintenance and upgrades, the cost of rocket launches, and the risk of failed launches.

The Amazon executive also compared the surge in artificial intelligence development to the internet boom of the early 2000s. He urged humanity to be optimistic, stating that the wave of artificial intelligence shares common traits with the dot-com era, when a huge hype was followed by the collapse of many companies.

"We must be extremely optimistic about the societal and beneficial consequences of artificial intelligence, just like with the internet 25 years ago, which are real and will continue. It is important to decouple potential bubbles and the consequences of their bursting that may occur from reality," said Bezos.
