Месси

Argentine national team forward Lionel Messi scored two goals in the match against Austria. Argentina won 2-0.

For 38-year-old Messi, these are the 17th and 18th goals of his career in World Cups, surpassing the achievement of German Miroslav Klose (16).

He could have scored more - in the 9th minute, Lionel Messi missed a penalty for a foul on Lautaro Martinez.

Now Messi has five goals in this tournament (after a hat-trick in the match against Algeria).

Frenchman Kylian Mbappe can also approach this achievement, as he has already scored 14 goals in tournaments.

The match took place exactly 40 years after the victorious quarterfinal of the 1986 World Cup, in which Argentine Diego Maradona scored with his hand, but the goal was counted.
