Canadian resident Lorn Warburton shared details about the severe course of the illness caused by hantavirus, which led him to spend nearly three weeks in the hospital.
According to him, the illness started as a regular viral infection but quickly led to serious breathing problems and a sharp deterioration in his condition.
Warburton noted that the first symptoms resembled his experience with COVID-19 in 2023: severe fatigue, headache, and body aches. However, this time his condition deteriorated rapidly — he experienced pronounced shortness of breath and severe weakness.
"It was hell on earth," he told BBC News in an interview, describing his condition during the acute phase of the illness.
The man emphasized that the sudden decline in health was a shock to him, and the infection progressed much more aggressively than previous illnesses he had experienced.
It was previously reported that the presumed first fatality from hantavirus was identified on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The victim was a 70-year-old Dutch ornithologist who enjoyed birdwatching.
The Canadian's story has once again drawn attention to the dangers of hantavirus, which can develop rapidly and cause severe complications, writes bb.lv. In light of reports of cases on the MV Hondius, specialists are urging people to pay close attention to symptoms and seek medical help promptly.
