Former Latvia's No. 1 tennis player Anastasija Sevastova retires from her tennis career, the athlete announced on social media on Thursday.

"It is never easy to say goodbye to something you truly love, but after careful consideration, I have made my decision. It is time to say goodbye to professional tennis," wrote the 36-year-old tennis player on her Facebook page.

"Looking back on all these years — actually decades — I feel nothing but gratitude. It has been an honor for me to share my life on tour with amazing players, coaches, physiotherapists, sponsors, and of course, incredible fans," noted Anastasija Sevastova.

She also wrote that her tennis career was like a rollercoaster — full of ups and downs, joys and challenges.

"Nevertheless, I am proud of everything I have achieved, and I feel even more grateful for the relationships and friendships I have been able to build with so many outstanding people," added the former world No. 11 in the WTA rankings.

In conclusion, she addressed her family and closest ones: "Know that my deepest gratitude and infinitely great love are always with you."

The Latvian tennis player had already temporarily interrupted her sports career in 2013 due to injuries, but she returned in 2015 and achieved her best result: three years later, she climbed to 11th place in the WTA rankings. In 2022, Sevastova once again temporarily paused her career, returning to the court two years later.

Last year, Sevastova was nominated for the WTA "Comeback of the Year" award.

Throughout her career, Sevastova won four WTA singles titles. Her best result in Grand Slam tournaments was in 2018 at the US Open, where she reached the semifinals.

Anastasija Sevastova ends her career ranked 195th in the WTA rankings.
