Which athlete's sweater was sold at auction for a record $2.8 million?

The jersey of Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky, in which he won the Stanley Cup in 1988 and played his last game for the Edmonton Oilers, was sold at Goldin Auctions for $2.8 million.

According to ESPN, the jersey of Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky, with the number 99, in which he won the Stanley Cup in 1988 and played his last game for the Edmonton Oilers, was sold at Goldin Auctions. The transaction amount was $2.806 million, setting a record for all hockey sweaters.

In the 1988 Stanley Cup Final, Edmonton defeated the Boston Bruins (the series score was 4-0). In the final series, Gretzky scored 13 points (3 goals + 10 assists). This was his last trophy with the Canadian club and the fourth championship title in five years. A few months later, the forward was traded to the Los Angeles Kings.

The previous record ($1.452 million) also belonged to this sweater, established at the Grey Flannel Auctions in 2022. It is noted that the price increased after an examination by MeiGray confirmed and documented that Gretzky wore this sweater in five different games, including the game on March 1, 1988, in which he recorded his 1,050th career assist, breaking Gordie Howe's record.
