“This is a very important decision. He is the best scorer and point producer on our team, and he has been with the club for a long time. This is a family decision, and we support him, giving him time to make it. The only way for him to decide is to take a break and spend time with his family.

Such a player comes along once in a generation. He means so much to the city, the club, the NHL, and our fans. He has earned the right to think about his decision. Everyone wants him to make the decision that he believes is best for himself. Whatever he chooses, we will support him. He still loves the game, our team, and the fans. Ovechkin has been playing for Washington in the NHL since 2005. His contract with the Capitals runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. The 40-year-old forward is the all-time leading scorer in NHL regular season history with 928 goals and ranks second on the league's all-time scoring list including playoffs (1,005 goals).
