Latvian figure skater Denis Vasiliev finished in 21st place at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague on Saturday, LETA reports.

For the third consecutive year, American figure skater Ilia Malinin became the champion, who was the best in both programs and scored a total of 329.40 points. Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama rose from sixth to second place with 306.67 points, while his compatriot Shun Sato finished third with 288.54 points, moving up from fourth position.

Estonian Alexander Selevko was in third place after the short program, but a sixth-place finish in the free skate dropped him to sixth overall with a total of 270.42 points. The vice-leader after the short program was French skater Adam Siao Him Fa, who finished eighth in the free skate and ended up with only 1.14 points more than Selevko.

Vasiliev fell twice at the beginning of the free skate after triple jumps, losing his chances for a high score. He received 129.27 points for the free skate, finishing in second-to-last place, 23rd, and with a total of 211.54 points dropped from 13th to 21st place.

In the short program, the Latvian scored 82.27 points — his second-best result of the season — and placed 13th among 36 participants.

In turn, Fedor Kulish made two falls early in the short program and received 56.85 points, finishing the competition in 36th place and not qualifying for the free skate.

The 26-year-old Vasiliev competed in his tenth World Championship. His best result was in 2020 when he finished sixth.

For 21-year-old Kulish, this was his second World Championship and his first as a citizen of Latvia. The athlete, born in Ukraine, placed 24th in his debut championship last year.

At the Olympic Games, Vasiliev and Kulish finished 18th and 28th, respectively, while at the European Championship, they placed ninth and 15th, respectively.
