A ceremonial welcome for the participants of the XXV Winter Olympic Games in Milan–Cortina d'Ampezzo, including bronze medalist in short track Robert Kruzbergs, will take place today at Riga Airport, the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC) informed the LETA agency.
After 6:00 PM, Latvian Olympians will arrive at the airport, where they will be greeted by representatives of the media, relatives, and representatives of the Ventspils municipality.
Along with the athletes, coaches, support staff, media teams, and delegation leaders will also return. After arriving in Riga, bronze medalist in short track Kruzbergs, as well as Ventspils residents Karlis Kruzbergs and Jakabs Kalenda, will head in a ceremonial convoy to Ventspils — to the 'Latvia' concert hall. The athletes will be transported in specially decorated vehicles accompanied by the State Police crews.
Around 9:00 PM, an official welcome for the athletes will take place in Ventspils at the square near the 'Latvia' concert hall. During the event, Kruzbergs and Kalenda will be honored with the accompaniment of a brass band. During the ceremony, the athletes will also receive monetary awards granted by the municipal council for their achievements at the Olympic Games.
As reported, Kruzbergs won a bronze medal in the 1500 meters at the Olympic Games, securing Latvia's second medal at these Games. Despite sustaining a knee injury during the competition, the athlete continued to perform and achieved Latvia's best result in Olympic short track. Meanwhile, bobsledder Kalenda finished eighth in the two-man event and tenth in the four-man event at his first Olympic Games.
For their performances at the Olympic Games, the deputies of the Ventspils council awarded Kruzbergs a monetary prize of 7000 euros. Special thanks were also expressed to the athlete's coach Karlis Kruzbergs for his professional work, contribution, and support on the path to Olympic success — he was awarded a prize of 3500 euros, as well as to the first coaches of Robert Kruzbergs, Maris Birzuliss and Irina Ozolina, each of whom received a monetary prize of 1500 euros for their contribution to the athlete's development.
