The International Federation of Football (FIFA) and sports goods manufacturer Adidas have unveiled the official ball for the 2026 World Cup, named Trionda, reports LETA citing DPA.
For the first time in history, the final tournament of the World Cup will take place in three countries — the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The name Trionda translates from Spanish as 'three waves'.
The ball's design features a red, green, and blue color scheme — in honor of the three host countries.
"I can't wait for this beautiful ball to hit the back of the net," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the presentation.
According to FIFA, the ball boasts a number of important technical characteristics and innovations.
Deep seams provide a surface that evenly distributes air resistance and ensures optimal flight stability. Additionally, textured elements, visible only up close, improve grip during strikes and dribbling in wet conditions.
The ball is equipped with a microchip featuring a motion sensor with a frequency of 500 Hz, which transmits accurate data in real-time to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which, as FIFA notes, should enhance the quality of refereeing decisions.
The World Cup kicks off on June 11, 2026, with the final taking place on July 19. This will be the first tournament featuring 48 teams.
