The Latvian government is preparing to approve another contribution for the purchase of American military equipment for Ukraine. After the new transfer, the total amount of Latvian support under the international PURL initiative will exceed 24 million euros.
The government will soon consider a proposal to allow the Ministry of Defense to transfer an additional 7 million euros for the purchase of military equipment produced in the United States for Ukraine. The funds will be allocated within the framework of the international PURL mechanism, which was created for allies and partners to acquire American weapons and transfer them to the Ukrainian side.
The new aid scheme emerged after an agreement reached between NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. President Donald Trump in the summer of 2025. Under this mechanism, European countries and Canada take on the financing of purchases of American military products for Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the supply of weapons from the U.S. plays an important role for the Ukrainian army. According to Ukrainian sources, about 75% of its military needs are related to American weapon systems, especially air defense systems.
Latvia is already participating in this program. Throughout 2025, the country contributed 7.2 million euros to the PURL initiative. An additional ten million euros was decided to be allocated by the government in February of this year.
What is important to know: if the new decision is approved, the total amount of Latvia's contributions under PURL will reach 24.2 million euros. Thus, Latvia will continue to increase its participation in one of the key international mechanisms for supporting Ukraine.
The PURL initiative has become part of a new model of assistance, where allies finance the purchase of American weapons instead of direct supplies from the U.S. This approach is designed to expedite the provision of necessary equipment and armaments to Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense believes that this mechanism allows for a more prompt response to the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces in the context of the ongoing war.
For 2026, the total funding required for the implementation of the PURL initiative is estimated at 15 billion U.S. dollars. Latvia remains among the countries participating in the formation of this support fund.
