The head of the Ministry of Economics and one of the leaders of the Union of Greens and Farmers addressed a message to the "Progressives."
As is known, the members of the Saeima faction "Progressives" are inviting Prime Minister Evika Silina for a discussion tomorrow. The purpose of the meeting is to understand why the head of government "behaves this way" towards the "Progressives." However, a representative of another coalition force - the Union of Greens and Farmers - in their statement today called on the "Progressives" to determine today whether they are ready to take political responsibility for the defense sector and if they have a candidate for this position. It should be noted that the question of political responsibility for the Ministry of Defense hangs in the air, as the candidate proposed by Silina for the ministerial post - Raivis Melnis - is a non-partisan professional. At the same time, the "Progressives" are not familiar with him at all - how can they take responsibility for him?
"Latvia currently needs security, stability, and clear actions, not political drama.
The Union of Greens and Farmers expects one of two decisions from the Progressives this week: either immediately propose a new candidate for the Minister of Defense capable of effectively defending the country, or honestly admit that they are unable to take responsibility for the defense sector and refuse it.
The Progressives themselves removed their minister. This is a political choice of the party itself, and thus the responsibility for the future fully remains with the Progressives. During this government, this is already the third time that the Progressives have changed their minister. In the defense sector, such instability is not just a political issue; it directly affects public trust in the country's security, the continuity of decisions, and the ability of the state to act confidently and professionally in crisis situations.
That is why answers to the most important questions should have been provided already on Sunday, at the moment when the minister resigned. Society and coalition partners had the right to expect a clear vision:
-
Either the "Progressives" fully take political responsibility for the defense sector;
-
What conclusions have been drawn after this crisis;
-
The next course of action.
We are still waiting for these answers today," stated one of the leaders of the Union of Greens and Farmers, Minister of Economics Viktor Valainis.
