Today in Rezekne, at the off-site meeting of the Council for the Implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Cabinet of Ministers, the Director of the State Chancellery, Raivis Kronbergs, stated that Latvia is unimaginable without Latgale.
He noted that Latvia is not just Riga or state institutions. "Latvia is created by families, communities, parishes, and towns in Kurzeme, Zemgale, Vidzeme, and Latgale," stated Kronbergs, who lives in Riga and is employed in a government institution.
Today marks the Day of the Latgale Congress, established in honor of the Latgale Congress of Latvians, which took place on April 27, 1917, and the decisions made by it, which became an important step towards the creation of a unified and independent Latvian state in 1918.
The central issue on the agenda of the off-site meeting of the Memorandum Council was security on the eastern border. In this regard, Kronbergs particularly emphasized the security of the information space, noting that the greatest threat is not differing opinions, but distrust.
"Disinformation often targets the regions: they try to sow discord among us, to divide us. But our strength lies in our ability to prevent this," said Kronbergs.
The Memorandum Council includes representatives from the State Chancellery, six ministries, the Prime Minister's Bureau, and eight non-governmental organizations.
The memorandum of cooperation between NGOs and the Cabinet was signed over 20 years ago. Currently, the memorandum has been signed by 577 organizations.
