The Secretary of State for Defense decided to 'not continue working under such circumstances'

The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Defense Aivars Purins has resigned, the LETA agency was informed by the ministry.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds ("Progressives") said that the defense sector is currently under increased pressure. According to him, unfounded claims and accusations are being spread in the public domain in an attempt to undermine the progress of the industry or to erode trust in it.

"The Secretary of State has decided not to continue working under such circumstances," the minister said, emphasizing that he respects this decision.

Purins will leave his position on May 31.

Spruds also emphasizes that significant reforms were carried out during Purins' tenure, including in the area of security, major financial programs were skillfully managed towards allocating 5% of GDP for defense, major procurements were made, and the foundations for the development and cooperation of the defense industry were laid.

The minister thanks Purins for joining the ministry's team under difficult circumstances and for developing the industry with integrity and great responsibility.

Purins has held the position of Secretary of State for the Ministry of Defense since April 29, 2024. Prior to this, he was an advisor to the president on national security and the secretary of the National Security Council.
