The State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Aivars Purinsh, has resigned, the ministry reported.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds ("Progressives") vaguely stated that the defense sector is currently under increased pressure. According to him, unfounded claims and accusations are being spread in the public domain in an attempt to undermine the progress of the industry or to erode trust in it.

"The State Secretary decided not to continue working under such circumstances," the minister said, emphasizing that he respects this decision.

Who attempted to "undermine trust," and what "circumstances" damaged Purinsh's career, his superior Spruds did not disclose.

However, Spruds mentioned that during Purinsh's tenure, reforms were carried out, including in the area of security, major financial programs were skillfully managed towards allocating 5% of GDP for defense, significant procurements were made, and the foundations for the development and cooperation of the defense industry were laid.

The minister thanked Purinsh for joining the ministry's team under challenging circumstances and for developing the sector.

Purinsh will serve for one month and will leave the position on May 31.

Purinsh has held the position of State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense since April 29, 2024. Prior to that, he was an advisor to President Egils Levits on national security and the secretary of the National Security Council.
