On Tuesday, the government supported amendments to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations that provide for the redistribution of 4.7 million euros to attract and retain medical personnel in the public healthcare system.
Funding in the amount of 4,715,030 euros, previously intended for national health protection and disease prevention programs, will be directed towards attracting and retaining medical personnel in the public healthcare system, especially in hospitals. The Ministry of Health notes that additional funding is necessary as the resources for compensation have already been exhausted, while new applications continue to arrive.
At the same time, there is still a shortage of personnel providing state-paid medical services in the public healthcare system.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that even after the redistribution of funds, the implementation of national-scale health promotion and disease prevention activities for the residents of Latvia will continue. In particular, support is planned for initiatives related to healthy eating, reducing dependencies, promoting physical activity, strengthening mental health, sexual and reproductive health, reducing trauma, limiting the spread of infections, popularizing vaccination, acquiring first aid skills, and implementing parenting skills programs during prenatal and early childhood development periods.
The target audience for national health promotion and disease prevention activities includes all residents of Latvia, especially groups at risk of social and territorial alienation. In particular, these are children and youth, people with dependencies, parents, employees, including the elderly, as well as healthcare and educational institutions, local governments, planning regions, public organizations, and other institutions.
Currently, the total funding for the initiative amounts to 13,185,480 euros, of which 11,207,658 euros are provided by the European Social Fund Plus, and 1,977,822 euros are co-financed from the state budget.
