Although the Latvian team has two medals in the Olympic standings - silver and bronze, the athletes have also won gold.
The solidarity of Latvian Olympians with Ukraine is true gold, said the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, who welcomed the participants of the 2026 Winter Olympics at the Riga Castle on Tuesday.
Rinkevics congratulated the luger Elina Ieva Bota on winning the silver medal and the short tracker Roberts Krūzbergs on the bronze medal.
The President noted that in our time, sports are often associated with various political activities. He mentioned that Ukrainian athletes were not granted freedom of expression at the Winter Olympics and were not allowed to remind others about the war.
In Rinkevics' opinion, this was unjustified. The President highly appreciated the solidarity of Latvian athletes, calling it "gold."
As previously reported, Latvia was represented by the largest delegation in its history at the 25th Winter Olympics, with 68 athletes. Latvian athletes competed in nine sports and 28 disciplines.
The flag bearer of the Latvian delegation at the opening ceremony in Milan was hockey player Kaspars Daugaviņš, in Cortina it was skier Jennifer Germana, and at the closing ceremony in Verona it was Krūzbergs and Eiduka.
The Winter Olympics in Italy took place from February 6 to February 22.
