The military operation by the US and Israel against Iran is understandable considering its long-standing activities in the region, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated to reporters on Tuesday.

Today, during a meeting with the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mierina (New Unity), significant attention was given to the military operation by the US and Israel against Iran.

Rinkēvičs considers the operation understandable, given Iran's long-standing activities in the region, including non-compliance with United Nations Security Council resolutions, refusal to cooperate on nuclear non-proliferation issues, and support for terrorist organizations.

“If we as an international community cannot stop aggressive states by the rule of law, then at some point, real military force comes into play,” Rinkēvičs stated, adding that he has become “a rather tough realist and pragmatist.”

“Diplomacy will only have a place when Iran abandons any plans to develop a military nuclear program and its aggressive regional foreign policy,” the politician noted.

The president emphasized that the international order established after World War II no longer exists, and the coming years will be fraught with risks. Latvia’s priorities in this context are state security and defense capability, as well as strengthening transatlantic ties.

“In the coming years, financial resources must be allocated for state defense, state security, including internal security,” Rinkēvičs said.

Speaking about a possible change of power in Iran, the president emphasized that this will be decided by the Iranian people themselves. He noted that Latvia’s economic interest in the region is stability, as rising oil and gas prices can quickly affect Latvian consumers, leading to increased prices for food and other goods and rising inflation.
