The former mayor of Ogre calls for training drone pilots from the school bench.
"In order for us to be ready for lesson X, we need to prepare drone operators, so it is necessary to introduce drone training in schools," said former mayor of Ogre Egils Helmanis (National Alliance) after returning from Ukraine.
The borders of Latvia, Russia, and Belarus are about 450 km long. It is easy to calculate how many pilots we need just to monitor this border, not counting the number of pilots operating 'kamikaze' drones to destroy the occupiers. Then there are the drone pilots who would assist medics in delivering medical aid to soldiers. The drone pilots providing support to the military and the drone pilots operating drones that destroy enemy drones.
To be prepared for all this, we must learn from the Ukrainians and train several tens of thousands of pilots. Such thoughts occurred to me during this trip. The world is evolving, but are we keeping up with it? We can only demand from people what they have been taught.
In Russia, drone education begins in the 6th grade. When I spoke with Minister of Education Dace Melbarde, she did not take this seriously and referred to how difficult it is to implement such training. When will we finally understand that our aggressive neighbor already has textbooks for grades 6-9 on designing and piloting drones? In Ogre, we will try to introduce drone piloting training in every regional secondary school by September. We will try to set a personal example of what needs to be done at the state level and by responsible individuals to integrate drones into the educational program for piloting and designing," the politician wrote on the social network Facebook.
