Close cooperation between the two countries in NATO will be one of the priorities of the new U.S. ambassador to Latvia, Melissa Argyris.
Today, Argyris presented her credentials to President Edgars Rinkēvičs at the Riga Castle. She then made a brief statement to the press.
Argyris emphasized that it is a great honor for her to assume the position of U.S. ambassador to Latvia. During her meeting with Rinkēvičs, she confirmed that it is a great honor for her to work in a country that shares a commitment to freedom with the United States.
"I respect Latvia's leadership in our common defense," Argyris said.
She stated that Latvia is a role model as it commits to spending 5% of its gross domestic product on defense. Additionally, border security is a priority for Latvia, Argyris added.
At the same time, she emphasized that the partnership between Latvia and the United States goes far beyond security. Her experience in business and philanthropy has shaped Argyris's approach to partnership and problem-solving, she said.
"I am excited to strengthen our trade ties by supporting investments, innovation, and energy cooperation. I am very grateful for the warm welcome, especially in this cold February. I look forward to developing our long-standing traditions of friendship," Argyris said.
Today, the new U.S. ambassador will also meet with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and Foreign Minister Baiba Braže.
As reported, Argyris has no diplomatic experience, but according to U.S. media, she donated two million dollars to the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
Her biography on the U.S. State Department website states that Argyris is a real estate investor in California. She has held various positions at Arnel & Affiliates, a company owned by the Argyris family, including as vice president of the company.
She is also the executive director of the Argyris Family Charitable Foundation.
