Studying or Hanging Out? Latvia to Tighten Rules for Students from Third Countries

The Ministry of the Interior of Latvia proposes to tighten control over citizens from third countries. In particular, universities will be required to notify the State Border Guard if a foreign student misses classes for three days without a valid reason, instead of the current 14.

Amendments to the immigration law have been submitted for a third reading in the Saeima and are part of a broader plan by the Ministry of the Interior to strengthen control over the stay of citizens from third countries.

It is also proposed to: • limit the recruitment of citizens from third countries for simple professions; • prohibit employment agencies from hiring such workers; • tighten sanctions for violations, including a deposit for potential deportation; • prohibit family reunification for undergraduate and master's students from non-NATO countries.

Earlier, the Saeima already supported these amendments in the second reading.
