Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia intend to coordinate their national energy strategies by 2050 to achieve systemic development, integration, and reliable energy supply.

Energy ministers from the three Baltic states signed a corresponding statement in Riga on Wednesday, reported the Lithuanian energy ministry.

"The document aims to strengthen cooperation and regular information exchange between the Baltic countries, harmonize long-term energy strategies until 2050, particularly in the areas of renewable energy development, energy system integration, infrastructure development, and supply security," the ministry's statement said.

Additionally, Lithuanian Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas discussed with his Latvian and Estonian counterparts the priorities of the Baltic states' energy policy for the coming years. During the conversation, the focus was on infrastructure protection and coordination of strategic energy projects.

In the Latvian capital, Vaičiūnas also met with the head of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity, Catherine Jerez.

The meeting addressed energy security issues a year after the synchronization of the Baltic states with the continental European energy grid, the protection of critical energy infrastructure, and potential areas of cooperation with the United States.

"Lithuania plans significant investments in the protection of vital energy infrastructure, so we see great potential for cooperation with American companies and experts who have extensive experience in this area," the ministry quoted Vaičiūnas as saying.

As reported by BNS, in January, the ministry announced that the European Union (EU) allocated €22 million for the protection of critical energy infrastructure in Lithuania. The Baltic states and Poland received a total of €113 million.

Earlier this week, Vaičiūnas mentioned that the EU allocated these funds only for the protection of facilities related to synchronization, and the countries in the region will seek broader use of funds to ensure energy security, for which around €1 billion will be needed by 2027.

The energy minister also participated in a conference organized by the World Energy Council in Riga, which focused on the energy sector of the Baltic Sea region.

BNS reported that on Monday, Lithuania celebrated the Day of Energy Independence of the Baltic States for the first time. Last year, the Seimas included it in the list of commemorative days, as on February 9, 2025, the Baltic states synchronized with Western European power grids.
