Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö is being considered for the role of EU special envoy to restore relations with Russia, reports the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
According to the publication, this issue was discussed in Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.
Among other candidates for this position, according to the newspaper, are former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Italian Prime Minister and ex-President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi.
Earlier, Sauli Niinistö stated that Europe should engage in direct dialogue with Russia, as U.S. President Donald Trump does.
Niinistö was the President of Finland from 2012 to 2024.
As reported bb.lv, on Wednesday, February 4, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinī unexpectedly called for the resumption of contacts with the Kremlin. "I am ready to go," Silinī boldly suggested. But it seems the EU rejected her candidacy.
