The parliamentary session may drag on until late evening.
The upcoming plenary session of the Saeima promises to be very long! It cannot be ruled out that the deputies may not manage to consider the entire agenda in one day. The session on Thursday will begin with the annual foreign policy debates. As the press service of the Saeima reminded today, this year's debates are taking place at a significant time — 105 years ago, on January 26, 1921, in Paris, the Supreme Council of the Allies recognized Latvia de iure. This was the political executive body of the victorious countries in World War I - Great Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, and Japan, which shaped the post-war international order. This decision was soon followed by other countries. By the end of 1922, 28 countries had recognized Latvia de iure, and throughout the interwar period, 42 states did so.
Traditionally, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present the main report on the results of the foreign policy year and plans for the future, and the president will also be present at the meeting. By the time of preparing this material, 20 people had registered to participate in the debates - including the Speaker of the Saeima, leaders of factions and parliamentary delegations, the Prime Minister, and ministers...
A very sensitive draft resolution of the Saeima, which calls on deputies of the opposition faction "Latvia First" to support awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the President of the United States, is also "timed" to the debates. Now each of the parliamentarians will have to decide whether they are for or against the "Nobel Prize" for Trump. The deputies of this same faction have also put forward another initiative to express no confidence in Evika Silina, and therefore, after the conclusion of the foreign policy debates, she will have to stay in the Saeima and, as has already happened this month, speak in her defense.
