Riga, January 19, LETA. Last year, the State Security Service (SSS), based on risks to Latvia's national security, in cooperation with the State Border Guard, denied entry to 1,764 foreigners who posed a threat, including citizens of Russia involved in the war against Ukraine, the SSS reported.
This year, as of January 17, entry into the country has been denied to 62 foreigners.
According to the SSS, denials are most often based on a combination of several risk factors. The service conducts a comprehensive assessment to identify any threats to national security.
The most common reasons for entry bans include support for Russia's war against Ukraine, service in the armed forces of Russia or Belarus, contacts with individuals working in the intelligence services of Russia or Belarus, and participation in Russia's propaganda and disinformation campaigns against NATO countries, including Latvia.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the SSS, along with other services, has implemented enhanced migration control measures at border checkpoints and within the country to prevent the entry and stay of individuals who pose a threat to the country.
