Political Scientist on the Ruling Parties: “They Barely Talk to Each Other”

Professor Juris Rosenvalds summarized the year for the ruling coalition.

Professor of LU, political scientist Juris Rosenvalds, in an interview with Latvian Radio, reminded that throughout the past year, the Siliņa government "struggled with quorum," as the ruling parties had a minimal majority in the Saeima. And now the election campaign has begun...

"In previous years, there were plenty of attempts to destabilize and overthrow the government, but the coalition parties, relying on their majority in the Saeima, managed to keep the political processes relatively stable. This year, that was not the case. An important role in this was played by the Union of Greens and Farmers, which, after not very successful municipal elections, began to prepare in a timely manner for the Saeima elections, thinking more about their voters," noted the political scientist. He pointed out that for the first time in many years, the unity of the coalition began to crumble due to ideological contradictions!

"As a result, the year ended with the observation that the two coalition partners — the 'Progressives' and the Union of Greens and Farmers — barely talk to each other and, in any case, at every opportunity, they poke at each other, expressing various grievances and so on," recalled J. Rosenvalds. But despite all the contradictions and intolerance towards each other, the political scientist believes that the Siliņa government will not collapse in the new year and will last until the elections.
