A deputy from the National Alliance proposes to publish job advertisements exclusively in Latvian. This could deprive Ukrainians of the opportunity to submit advertisements for hiring compatriots affected by the war in Latvia in both Russian and Ukrainian.
Arthur Butans, a deputy from the opposition National Alliance, has submitted a proposal for amendments to the labor law, which stipulates that employers must publish job advertisements in the state language.
Butans proposes to add a new requirement to the labor law stating that "job advertisements must be published in the state language."
As reported, on December 11, the deputies of the Saeima supported in the first reading the amendments to the labor law proposed by the Ministry of Welfare, which sharply divided opinions among social partners.
During the consideration of this bill in the government, prolonged discussions ensued, as ministers and social partners held differing views on several issues. An agreement could not be reached, so it was decided to continue working on the bill in the Saeima.
Later, sharp debates on these amendments also took place in the Saeima's Commission on Social and Labor Affairs between representatives of the Latvian Confederation of Employers and the Latvian Free Trade Union Union.
The amendments concern the use of high-risk artificial intelligence systems in the workplace, collective agreements, payment for downtime, long-term employee incapacity, and changes to the duration of the working day and working week.
