Three Presidents Gathered in Riga and Obstructed the Fourth – Putin

The peace plan is unacceptable for Russia, and the chances of reaching unanimity are minimal, emphasized Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda at a joint press conference of the Baltic states' presidents on Thursday.

He noted that he highly appreciates the efforts of the U.S. administration in the peace process, but the problem lies in the differing visions of Ukraine and Russia regarding peace. The Lithuanian president reminded that the initial peace plan was altered in favor of Ukrainian interests, but now this plan is completely unacceptable for Russia.

Nauseda emphasized that Russia must be compelled to at least approach the negotiating table, and as a solution, he mentioned sanctions, including the need to discuss the 20th sanctions package, as well as ongoing military support for Ukraine. He stated that there is no doubt that Ukraine must be supported by all possible means to ensure victory on the battlefield, and that the possibility of finding a compromise is now minimal, but attempts must be made.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs noted that Ukraine and Europe want peace based on the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security guarantees for Ukraine. However, "Russia does not wish to negotiate in good faith at the negotiating table" and wants to continue the war, using various means to create the impression that negotiations are ongoing, but ultimately not agreeing to either a peace plan or a treaty.

According to the Latvian president, he is often asked about fears and concerns, given the historical experience of the Baltic states. Rinkēvičs pointed out that "we are not paid to express concerns or fears," but to defend the countries and achieve the best possible outcome.

The Latvian president emphasized that the issue of frozen Russian assets also needs to be addressed. How – he did not say.

Estonian President Alar Karis added that everyone wants peace. "And the dictator of Russia, Vladimir Putin," according to Karis, "is not interested in peace." He also noted that Putin is pressuring Ukraine, highlighting the approaching winter, and therefore support for Ukraine is necessary right now. He also added that the Baltics do not have 100 percent information about the negotiation process, but there is an understanding of what is happening.
