In 5 hours of sessions (not counting breaks), the parliamentarians have not even started discussing the main item on the agenda - the budget for the next year.
The budgetary suffering in the Saeima continues - the total duration of the session, not counting breaks for breakfast and lunch, has already exceeded 5 hours. The effectiveness, however, is not high - during this time, the deputies have not even managed to consider all the bills included in the budget package. If things continue at this pace, then today, by 21:00, that is, by the end of the session, the servants of the people will hardly manage to discuss even a tenth of all the proposals submitted for the 2026 budget. Let us remind you that a total of 290 proposals have been submitted for the budget!
The deputies are ready to work on the budget tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and if necessary, even on Saturday.
The opposition in the debates outlined three main grievances regarding the budget and the financial policy of the ruling party: uncontrolled debt accumulation, lack of real cuts in administrative expenses, and the opacity of the expenditures themselves. In addition, opposition deputies criticize the ruling party for the fact that, contrary to promises, this year salaries in public administration have indeed increased more than was promised. "You said that this year the maximum increase in your salaries would be 2.6%. The question is how you calculate that! Yesterday, the State Treasury published statistical data showing that salaries have increased by at least 5.7 percent! This means that everything will continue, you will continue to increase salary expenses," noted deputy Andris Kulbergs (United List).
