The Preili local government is conducting a survey of residents regarding the renaming of Ivan Sorokin Street in the locality of Stabulnieki, the local government reported.

This month, the local government unexpectedly received a request from residents proposing to change the name of Sorokin Street to Anton Skutelis Street. Skutelis is a native of the region and a respected professor of medicine.

And who is Sorokin? He revitalized agriculture in the area after the war. According to information from the Preili Museum of History and Applied Arts, Sorokin was the first chairman of the Kirov collective farm and a local farmer. He developed the flax industry in the region.

It is also known that Sorokin fought against the Nazis during World War II. He had no objections against Latvians — the local government specifically notes that there is no information in the museum's materials about his involvement in the genocide of the Latvian people organized by the Communist Party.

It seems that the only fault of the local farmer is his non-Latvian surname.

In any case, the local government invites residents to fill out a questionnaire by November 4 to express their opinion on renaming Sorokin Street to Skutelis Street, as well as to suggest their own options for a new name.

It should be noted that in recent years, a mass process of renaming streets has been initiated in Latvia. For instance, Riga no longer has Maskavas (Moscow), Gogol, Pushkin, Pikula, Brantkalns streets, and others. Even quite politically correct names like Nitzgale and Antonijas streets have been affected.
