Every second victim is a cyclist or pedestrian: alarming traffic accident statistics for the day 0

On Friday, 25 people were injured on the roads of Latvia. Among the injured were ten cyclists, four pedestrians, and an electric scooter driver. The police also detained 14 drunk drivers.

In the past 24 hours, 193 road traffic accidents were registered in Latvia, resulting in 25 people injured, reported the State Police. The highest number of injuries occurred in the Riga region — 12 people. Six more were injured in Vidzeme, four in Kurzeme, and three in Zemgale.

Among the injured were ten cyclists, one electric scooter driver, and four pedestrians.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in the evening in the Priekuļi municipality of Madona County, where two cars collided. Rescuers had to use hydraulic equipment to free a person from the damaged vehicle. The injured person was handed over to medical personnel.

Throughout the day, the police continued to identify drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. A total of 14 such drivers were detained: four each in Riga, Vidzeme, and Zemgale, and two more in Latgale.

In nine cases, the level of intoxication was so high that criminal proceedings were initiated. According to current legislation, in such cases, the vehicle is subject to confiscation or the cost is recovered from the offender.

The police also actively monitored compliance with speed limits. A total of 239 reports were filed for speeding violations. The highest number of offenders was identified in Vidzeme — 85 people. In Zemgale, 56 drivers were penalized, in Latgale — 43, in Kurzeme — 39, and in the Riga region — 16.

Additionally, three more drivers were held accountable for aggressive driving.

In total, police officers issued 585 reports for various traffic rule violations during the day.
