Today and tomorrow, Defense Minister Andris Spruds will be on a working visit to Spain, where he plans to discuss bilateral cooperation in the field of defense and current regional security issues with Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles Fernández, the Ministry of Defense informed the LETA agency.
At the meeting of the defense ministers of Latvia and Spain, the prospects for further cooperation between the two countries in the field of joint procurement and defense industry development are also planned to be discussed.
In Trubia, Spruds will visit the defense enterprise "GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas" to familiarize himself with the production of combat infantry vehicles "ASCOD" - the "Hunter" version, specifically designed for Latvia. Additionally, the minister has a scheduled visit to the ammunition and weapons manufacturing company "Rheinmetall Expal Munitions".
It was previously reported that in January of this year, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract with the Spanish company "GDELS-Santa Bárbara sistemas" for the supply of 42 combat infantry vehicles "ASCOD" - in the localized version for Latvia, "Hunter".
In June, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract with "GDELS-Santa Bárbara sistemas" for the procurement of an additional 42 combat infantry vehicles. As a result, Latvia will receive 84 vehicles. The participation of the Latvian defense industry in fulfilling the order is expected to be at least 30%.
