The voting in the Saeima was preceded by hours of debates.
Today, the members of the Saeima worked unusually efficiently: the plenary session lasted from 9 AM to 9 PM, which means, excluding breaks, 12 hours. During this time, the parliamentarians managed to discuss... two issues, as the debates on these two topics lasted almost 9 hours!
Let us remind you that first, the deputies discussed language policy for more than 4 hours, and then there were almost 5 hours of heated debates on the bill regarding Latvia's exit from the Istanbul Convention. The outcome, however, was predictable: with the votes of the opposition and the deputies from the Union of Greens and Farmers who joined them, the bill was supported in the first reading and may be adopted in the second reading in a week. The opponents of Latvia's exit from this convention - deputies from 'New Unity' and 'Progressives' - preferred not to participate in the voting at all.
