As reported by bb.lv, Edgars Rinkēvičs is urging Silīna and her ministers to decide - either work together or disperse. But it is unlikely that the politicians will act according to the president's scenario.
"If the current government cannot work, then perhaps it is time to make way for someone else," said the head of state today after the traditional weekly meeting with the Prime Minister. It is clear that this was a hint from the experienced Edgars Rinkēvičs to the ruling politicians - in other words, guys, make up your minds - if you are no longer satisfied with the current format of the government, then quickly change this government, create a new one so that the budget for 2026 can be adopted by the end of the year. If you are not yet ready for radical steps, then... stop the political games and ensure a stable majority in the Saeima for the adoption of the budget for 2026.
The president's position is clear, but politicians have their own interests and agenda. After all, they have an exam in less than a year (parliamentary elections), while Edgars Rinkēvičs has no rush - the presidential elections are only at the end of May or early June 2027 - already in the conditions of a new Saeima.
Therefore, Mr. Rinkēvičs can afford not to worry for now, unlike the members of the Saeima. According to rumors from the parliamentary corridors, the "rebels in power" - the Union of Greens and Farmers - are not planning to overthrow the government, as this usually does not please the conservative voter.
Even if voters are dissatisfied with the government, they still react poorly psychologically to chaos, lawlessness, and uncertainty. This means that the "green farmers" will continue to "quarrel," push their agenda, but will not leave the government themselves. Most likely, the "progressives" will not leave either - even if the Saeima majority votes for Latvia's exit from the Istanbul Convention, which is so dear to the "progressives". The "progressives" do not want to lose the opportunity to participate in the division of the budget pie, and it is also obvious: those who become the undertakers of this government will surely not make it into the next government.
According to unofficial information, all three coalition parties have already decided that they will stick together until the budget for 2026 and will try to ensure a "comfortable majority" during the discussion and adoption of the budget for 2026 in the Saeima - that is, at least 52 votes. The budget is planned to be adopted in the first and then the second reading at the end of November or early December.
