The conservative party of Argentina's President Javier Milei, "La Libertad Avanza" ("Freedom Moves Forward", LLA), achieved a decisive victory in the parliamentary midterm elections held on Sunday, according to aggregated results, LETA reports citing AFP and BBC.

According to estimates after counting almost all the votes, LLA received 41% of the votes, winning 14 out of 24 seats in the Senate and 64 out of 127 seats in the lower house of parliament that were contested on Sunday.

Milei stated that his party tripled the number of its seats, increasing representation in the lower house from 37 to 101 and in the Senate from six to 20 seats.

There are a total of 257 deputies in the lower house of parliament and 72 senators in the Senate.

The centrist-left Peronist coalition, which won the elections in the province of Buenos Aires last month, garnered 32% of the votes.

The results of Sunday’s elections strengthen Milei’s position in his efforts to cut government spending and reduce the level of economic regulation.

On Sunday, half of the lower house of parliament and a third of the Senate were elected.

During the election campaign, the national currency, the peso, significantly fell, forcing Milei to seek support from his ally, former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Washington promised an unprecedented aid package of $40 billion; however, at the same time, Trump warned Argentinians that he would not be generous if Milei did not succeed in Sunday’s elections.
