The temporary accommodation center for detained foreigners in Rauda, Augšdaugava County, is planned to open by September, the State Agency for Supply reported to LETA.
Currently, dismantling works are underway, as well as the arrangement of premises for foreigners and facilities necessary for the activities of the State Border Guard. Procurement of material and technical equipment for the operation of the center is also in progress.
Given the current pace of construction, it is anticipated that the process will be completed by September of this year. After the facility is put into operation, it will be handed over to the State Border Guard for use.
The center will accommodate foreigners who are subject to screening and border procedures.
The temporary center "Rauda" is being equipped in the building of the former school, and its goal is to ensure that all necessary security, identity, and health checks, as well as border procedures, are conducted quickly, efficiently, and in full compliance with European Union (EU) standards and international human rights standards.
"Rauda" will be a partially closed-type center, and foreigners will not be allowed to leave its territory voluntarily. Foreigners will stay in this center only during the initial checks and border procedures, as under the new regulations, individuals are not yet permitted free entry and movement within the country at this stage.
The center's premises will feature well-equipped living rooms with bathrooms, and there will be a kitchen, a recreation room, and a gym for foreigners where they can move freely. Plans are in place to create a sports field, a children's playground, and relaxation areas within the fenced territory of the center.
The "Rauda" center will also be equipped with intelligent video surveillance and alarm systems.
The center can accommodate up to 106 people at the same time.
Last autumn, the local government of Augšdaugava County decided to transfer part of the property of the former Rauda school to the state for the implementation of this project.
To ensure the operation of the center, the State Border Guard will establish a new structural unit here with 36 employees.
The temporary accommodation center is located 40 kilometers from Daugavpils.
