It is no secret that there is a certain percentage of students for whom studying, to put it mildly, is quite challenging. The reasons may vary, but the result is the same: the student "falls short" even of the minimum result. How many times is it permissible to hold a student back for another year?
Are there any older repeaters in our schools who are regularly not promoted to the next grade and start all over again each year?
As an expert on the portal bb.lv, senior expert in the communication and publicity department of the State Education Development Agency, Jana Veinberga, states:
– In grades one through eight, a student can be held back in the same class only once. This happens at the direction of the head of the educational institution where the student is enrolled. In the general secondary education program, students are not held back for another year.
If the educational institution determines that a student may have difficulties in obtaining the required grades in subjects, teachers, together with the student's parents, must provide the necessary support during the school year, without waiting for its completion, so that the student does not have to be held back in the same class.
But even if a student is held back in the same class, the educational institution is obliged to provide support for the successful continuation of their studies.
In cases where a student is identified as having learning difficulties or if it is related to their special needs, they must be provided with support to successfully master the curriculum, depending on their individual situation.
Receiving basic education in Latvia is mandatory. Therefore, if a person has not received the corresponding certificate for any reason, they are required to continue obtaining mandatory basic education until they reach the age of 18.
Thus, in Latvian educational institutions, it is possible for a situation to arise where a student in the class is older than their classmates. This is especially true for distance and part-time education programs.
